SOUTHFIRST: PRESENTS
NOAH SHELDON

ALMOST VEGETARIAN
25 February – 27 March, 2005
OPENING RECEPTION:  FRIDAY, 25 February 7–10 PM

SOUTHFIRST gallery is proud to present ALMOST VEGETARIAN, an exhibition of sculpture, video, photography and sound by NOAH SHELDON.  Sheldon’s first solo show in New York is on view from Feb. 25 – March 27.

Noah Sheldon’s sculptures, photographs, sound pieces and video are meditations tangentially related to his work as a professional photographer.  His sound  projects and video generate hypothetical locations such as the banks of a river he never visited in Venezuela, or a night spent watching fireflies illuminate a palm oil plantation in Malaysia; the artist never visited these locations, but has synthesized them from an accumulation of his photographs, sound recordings and animation. An omnivorous traveler in life, it is as if he is making up places for himself and his viewer to visit.  A series of one hundred and sixty color slides taken during his actual travels all over the world over a period of two years compile images, both intimate and sublime, which accumulate to reveal a nomadic subject with a penchant for natural scenes and solitary creatures. Works such as Grafted Sakura and Plywood Fountain investigate the performative necessity of the exhibition format without loosing the underlying desire to re-create an experience for the viewer. Their names refer to the same set of contradictions towards which the title of the exhibition points. He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Noah Sheldon studied Percussion and New Music at New England Conservatory of Music, Photography at Sarah Lawrence College and graduated with an MFA from Columbia in 2000.  His work has been shown at PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Tonic, Dupreau gallery in Chicago, and was most recently on display at White Columns Annex. He will be in the upcoming show “Good Titles from Bad Books” curated by Matthew Brannon at the Kevin Bruk Gallery in Miami in April.
