Edward Schexnayder
December 1 – January 14, 2012
Reception for the artist and Holiday Party: Sunday,
December 16, 3-6 PM
SOUTHFIRST is proud to present ÒUncanny Valley,Ó an
exhibition of new works by Edward Schexnayder. The
show will be on view from December 1 – January 14, 2012. There will be a reception
held for the artist from 3-6 pm on Sunday, December 16.
SchexnayderÕs first solo show is an
assembly of twenty works that repeat patterns and gestures—an
ink blot, a green striped textile which might constitute a beach resort deck
chair (or a Daniel Buren mural), a frayed houndstooth
pattern—in an array of ÒoutputÓ options: painting, editioned
ink jet print, t-shirt, wallpaper. The display of options—multiplied
through the use of mirrors—playfully stages a crisis in notions of
authenticity and value in the work of art. From crushed glass sprinkled on IKEA
shelves to a painting printed on a tote bag, many of the works in ÒUncanny
ValleyÓ combine gestures derived from the heroic individualism of Abstract
Expressionism with the infinitely reproducible logic of mundane consumer
products.
Born in Gallup, New Mexico, Edward Schexnayder holds an MFA from Pratt, and was a 2008 Studio
Fellow at the Whitney Independent Study Program. He has held residencies in Art
in GeneralÕs Eastern Europe Residency Exchange Program in Zagreb, Croatia, and
a NYFA artist fellowship. His work has recently appeared in exhibitions at Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, the Contemporary Arts Center,
New Orleans, and Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Los Angeles.
He lives and works in Brooklyn.
